Celebrate Love and Lust at Mt. Pulag

Mt. Pulag
Today is February 14, 2013, the Valentines Day, it is the start of my Mt. Pulag hiking itinerary.  This day is also my last day in the office and I will be back on Monday, imagine that!  I am not yet prepared for this event, my jackets and everything are still not yet in my backpack; I'll prepare it tomorrow, Friday, while washing my clothes.  I will also going to check my tent as well, if it's still okay, the last use was at " Lamyerda sa Borawan " in Quezon.  After my shift, I went to Greenland in Pasig City to borrow a sleeping bag just for this event.  As usual, every time I go there, we have drinking sessions and that's what happened.

Friday, February 15, 2013 - I was really busy cleaning my apartment, washing my used clothes and preparing for this huge celebration.  After my house chores, I think it was 1PM, I took a rest while surfing in facebook and getting updates from the participants of this event.  2PM I decided to sleep while the tv is on.  I woke up at around 4PM and I felt that I gained a lot of energy, so I continued my preparations.

9:13PM - I left the apartment wearing my blue clima-fit long sleeves, brown trekking pants, shoes and my 60L backpack.  For Security Purposes: I removed everything plugged in the electric outlet.  I can't explain the feeling that time, excited and pressured, I don't know.  Before going to bus terminal, I also took tricycle for 8 pesos, jeep for 8 pesos, bus for 16 pesos and then taxi for 100 pesos. TOTAL: 132 pesos.  Now, think a slim and gorgeous woman with a huge backpack, riding in a public utility vehicle - that's me!
PM - reached Victory Liner Inc. Terminal in Cubao - the meeting place of all the 17 participants.  I already met some of them but I truly excited to meet the others especially the cute boys - if there are, no comment yet.  I took a taxi from Galleria going to Five Star terminal in EDSA Northbound, then walked few meters and crossed the foot bridge connecting the two sides of EDSA in the area.

When I reached the bus terminal, I first saw Ron, Daes, Janneth, Elmer going to convenient store to buy snacks and water.  So, I followed them and bought 2 bottles of 1.5L for 80pesos.  After that, together with Ron we went back to the terminal and the others vanished.

When we entered the terminal, I met the other boys standing beside the bus and Al introduced me to them.  We had a lot of fun in chikahan portion since we already knew them. It was just few minutes when everyone was talking about anything, like their past climb and so on.  Of course, before leaving the terminal we also have some picture picture with the group, I think it was 11:33PM already.

12AM - we left the terminal.  We took Victory Liner Bus No. 6034 with free WiFi, so we had a chance to update our facebook and twitter while on the way.  I was sitting with Dawn and some of the Sabiteers occupied the vacant sits in front and back.  It was evening, so I didn't have any chance to see how gorgeous the nearby provinces are.  Our sleep were interrupted because of the road humps that the bus passes on.  If I am not mistaken, we have two stop overs.

Ambuklao Dam
5:30AM - it's the time of our Arrival in Victory Bus Terminal in Baguio.  After getting off the bus, we proceeded to the terminal.  We need more cash, so we went to the ATM nearby and got some monies.  Beside the ATM, we also had our very first group picture.  After the tiring trip, I went to the comfort room to release stress.  After all those activities, Al went to the ticketing booth and fixed everything like the tickets for tomorrow's trip.

6:15AM - we left the terminal and proceeded to the gas station almost in front of it.  Group picture again while eating my strawberry taho.  We were searching for our hired jeep beside the gas station.

6:26AM - we finally left the gas station and we were all inside the jeep.  Chikahan was out past time while looking on the downtown of Baguio City.  The streets on the city gave challenges to every newbie in this town, oopsss, it's my second time in Baguio, the streets are really confusing.

7:09AM - We arrived in Pinkan Jo Eatery, just beside the high way going to DENR.  We had a short break, but before going inside the resto, we again have a group photo shoot.  There was a group of mountaineers inside the resto, so we followed the line going to the cashier.  We bought our breakfast with coffee and our packed lunch in this resto.

8:05AM - time to pack up and proceed to the next destination - DENR.  New excitement were all on our faces that time, because we'll be doing the TOP LOAD on the jeep.  So, here's what happened, all our backpacks were inside the jeep, and we're on top of the jeep.  Same time, we left the resto and the sceneries were really great.  We have the 360 degrees access to see what's Benguet can offer.  The wind are really cold, but the sun was shining brightly, good luck to those with our sun block.

Mt. Pulag
9:16AM - after the exciting topload, we arrived at DENR on this time.  The left side of the road was full of jeepneys rented by the other groups.  When we proceeded to the office for briefing, I was amazed!  There were a lot of groups who were waiting for their time, in and outside of DENR were full of people.  In DENR, we processed the schedule and camp site for our group, take note: you need an appointment if you are planning to climb this mountain.  Meeting or briefing also needed before leaving the office.

11:50AM - we left DENR, this time we were inside the jeep but some of the boys  were topload still.  The road going to the Ranger Station is narrow compared to other streets.  It only contains one lane, so it is very advisable to pass in this road NOT ON RAINY days.  Passing this road is breathtaking, but good thing that the surroundings are really great.  We have an access to see the rice fields on top of the mountains.  Everything was green, the vegetable plantation have their own style and designs.  There are cabbage and carrots beside the cemented road.  The farmers in this area creates their own community.  I've noticed that their houses is made up of wood and a metal. The designs are like what I've saw in some tv shows in the US.

1:27PM - arrival in the ranger station.  Same thing, a lot of climbers were there and preparing for their trek.  The bags were huge and they were bringing their own tents.  In ranger station, we paid the fees and the guides.  We were 17 and we were forced to have two guides even though some of us already been their and familiar on the trail.  We took our lunch in this area, while we were standing and holding our food the dust were present in all areas and we didn't care about it, as long as we need to fill our empty stomach for another challenge that we will encounter.

2:02PM - we started ascending, so we have two batches with one guide each.  The mountain rages are really good in my eyes and camera. We were not the only group ascending that time, there were a lot of other climbers bringing their own jackets.  Before reaching the Camp 1, I was shocked because of my group mates were running to get space for our tents.  So, I also run while my 60L backpack was in my back.  After few moments, I questioned myself: "Why am I running?"  When I noticed that my sweat just came out  of my skin, I decided to just walk and enjoy the gorgeous sceneries.

Mt. Pulag 2020
2:45PM - I've reached the Camp 1 together with Dawn.  Camp 1 was filled with people, some were englishera with matching pasosyal accent, hahaha.  This camp contains flowering plants, pine trees and green grass.  The shed also gives shade to everyone who were eating their merienda.  Since it was filled with people, we just took five minutes standing beside the shed then we decided to go on the trail.  I thought all the people were on the camp 1, but along the trail, their were some group taking their five minutes rest.  So, again we decided to go one the next camp.  From Camp 1 to Camp 2, the trail is simple, with fog as our background in the picture.  Spring water signage is also present in every corner that has the fresh water from the ground

3:52PM - reached Camp 2, I thought it's gonna rain because of some rain drops I felt on my skin.  The fog was thicker compared to the previous camp or trails.  When I put my backpack on the sack filled with sand, and faced on the higher part or extension of Camp 2, I thought their was a fiesta because of the colorful tents pitched in there.  The first batch in our group who were running before were, also there waiting for the other members of the group.  But, after few minutes of rest we decided to go on the next camp - Camp 3 - our camp site.

5:43PM - reached the Camp 3 or the Camp site, together with Barney and Jen-the lady guide.  From Camp 2 going to Camp 3, the trail was simple, it's not complicated at all.  While having an executive walk on the trail, you have access to see the gorgeous formation of the ranges and how the brown color of it reflects on the sun shine.  The whole area is covered with grass land which dances every time that the wind blows.  The ranges also create shadows especially in the afternoon which add a special effects to the pictures.  As what I've said earlier, the trail is simple but my heart beats faster, maybe because of the higher elevation, so the oxygen and gravity presence is lower - I really don't know, I was absent when our teacher tackled this during high school. Before going to the Camp site, I captured this picture on the right.

Mt. Pulag campsite
Anyways, let's go back to Camp 3, the camp site is actually a shallow area, encircled by the ranges including the trail from Akiki.  Then, the clouds covered the ranges that gives a cold breeze.  The camp site or I can say the whole mountain ranges has 75 percent of grasslands.  Ron and Roge were already in the camp site. Ron also pitched her tent already and they ensured that there will still be spaces for the others tents.

As what you can see on the picture on the right, the camp site is like a subdivision of tents.  Another feista-like  scene from a far.   After conducting a survey in the area we've got, I pitched my tent beside the cogon grass.  I also ensured that I got a flat area, I don't what to happen again like what happened in Mt. Cristobal. After pitching my tent, I pitched the enormous mansion tent of Daes just beside my tent.  It was dawn when we're done with everything, but the others were still on the trail going to the camp site.  The air begun to get colder and the darkness was beginning to spread in the whole mountain.  Al and guide Jen borrowed our head lamps to go back to the previous camps to pick up the remaining group members who didn't have lamps.  It was a challenging part for us because we were depending our actions on the moon light.

Finally all the sabiteers were already in the camp site.  Next stop, cooking our dinner.  I gave Roge the honor to cook the rice, then we followed to heat up the cooked pork adobo.  The four guys on the other side shared their sinigang to us, perfect for the cold weather.

After dinner, some of the sabiteers went to their respective tents.  All of them were tired, except me and Al.  We both proceeded to the guys group and had some brandy drinking session, that's how we do our socials.  I think it was already 12mid night when we decided to take a rest.

5:00AM - I woke up or I mean we woke up, then Roge again did his job, this time coffee making using the cook set.  We had a great time playing with the fire, wait! don't think of something green in your mind, alright?  Due to accident, the butane losses it's lock to the stove's cable, so the fire scattered on the grass land.  Don't worry people, it was just small area just few inches from my tent, so, we pushed ourselves to stop the fire, Hello it's my tent!  Then after the hot breakfast:

Sea of Clouds
5:28AM - when everyone were done with the summit's preparations, we left our tents in the camp site and proceeded to the Summit for "Sea of Clouds."  We were nervous while walking on the trails for summit, because the stars in the sky disappeared in few moments and it's a bad sign.  The trail was filled with people who were also going to the summit to see the most awaited visitor.

5:48AM - we reached the summit.  The sky changes its color from dark to dark with orange stripes, then turned into a brilliant orange.  The wind was killing us, the sharp cold wind made us shaking while getting pictures.  When the "Sea of Clouds" just appeared, we were all happy that time, after the shaking challenge that we faced early in the morning.  If I am not mistaken, that moment, more than a hundred of people witnessed the gorgeous cloud formation.

6:36AM - after the breathtaking scene on the summit, we decided to go back to the camp site in this time. I was with Guide Jen running going down the camp site as what others were doing.  Reyna, Janneth and Virmz decided not to go back to the camp site, instead they let the porter get their bags.  When I reached the camp site, I prepared a hot coffee for myself and for the others, I knew that they needed it.  When all were already on the camp site, a lot of chikahan, question and answer portion were being brought to the open table, this is a late socials?  While talking about anything, some of us were cooking at the same time.  Fried hotdogs and some other remaining processed foods were cook by Art I think.  So, eating while cooking!

8:05AM - break camp.  We folded our tents, we packed our things properly in the bag.  The other groups also were doing the same thing. The sun shine replaced the darkness and the cold wind just vanished.  My sun block was really helpful in preventing skin damages.  Before leaving the camp site, we took a heavy breakfast to gain more energy.

Mt. Pulag 2020
9:05AM - we finally left the camp site, I was together with Roge and Al that time.  We enjoyed the gorgeous contours of the ranges that I didn't recognize during ascending.  The weather was also great that time, the sun is shining brightly, the sky was clear and the clouds were on the side of the mountain.  The wind wasn't that cold and my backpack was also lighter, maybe gravity is applicable this time.

10:03AM - I've reached Camp 2.  I was walking alone on the trail together with the group which I didn't knew.  I enjoyed a lot taking pictures while walking in my own pace.  My pace that time was faster compared to the other group.

10:50AM - I've reached Camp 1.  Some groups were take short break in this area, but I proceeded to follow the simple trail, I am almost in Ranger station.  My stomach begun to starve to I made my pace faster.

11:30AM - I've reached the Ranger Station.  I thought it was a fiesta, because of the people encircling the area.  Al were sitting and taking rest, my sweat was flowing to my head, eyes and nose even the wind was cold.  The three girls were already there waiting for me, first thing I did was, I requested a food from them and good thing that they have it.  We waited the other pipz before putting of backpacks to the jeep.

1:25PM - we left the Ranger station.  Student Ace was with us going to the DENR.  So same thing, we were inside the jeep then the 4 boys were top load again.  The view was really great, and the road gave us an amazing challenge.

2:50PM - we've reached DENR and logged out. There are stores beside the road near DENR, selling cold soda and ice cream, so it was the best selling product.  The jeep was filled with dust, I think all the part of it was covered with white dust.  Even our shirts, shoes and everything were really dirty.

3:01PM - we left DENR, as usual the four boys were still on the top of the jeepney.  No matter how thick the dust on the road, no matter how hot the sun shine was - it gave them an amazing experience.  While the driver was busy driving, all the passengers inside the jeepney were gaining energy by sleeping while sitting.

3:20PM - reached Jang-Jang Eatery in Bokod, Benguet. Took late lunch.  After the dusty road trip, we cleaned ourselves in this resto.  The people there were really nice, they let us use their faucet for free.  The store owner also allowed us to change our clothes in their house.  After cleaning and we were already refreshed, we took our late lunch.  I think I spent 40 pesos for plain rice and fried chicken.  There were also some groups from the summit who dropped by in the same resto.

4:56PM -  we left the resto.  All of us were occupying the sits inside the jeep and I was sitting beside Reyna, so there was a riot.  We were all noisy that time, laughing and shouting while the others were sleeping.  Wait the four guys again were on the top, I think it was their hobby.

6:33PM - reached Victory Bus Terminal - Baguio.  The people in the terminal were staring on us, I don't know the reason, I think they were amazed by my and Reyna's pek-pek  short.  We went directly to the ticketing office to fix our schedule first then took our dinner in the food court of the terminal in the second floor.  While our mouth were full, we spent our time in chickahan talking about nonsense things and we were reminiscing what happened on the summit.

7:30PM - we left the terminal.  I was sitting with Virmz in the left side of the bus and 5th row from the back.  I can't forget the time we noticed that the bus seat covers were orange, and I was also wearing the same color that time, then I wore my jacket to hide my shirt color.  When everything was properly set and the tickets were already fine, time to put my earphone into my ears for the bongang Shakira and Beyonce songs while on the way.  I got off the bus in Ortigas Ilalim, then walked few meters crossing the EDSA then took a taxi going to my apartment.

12:58PM - I've reached my apartment.  It was a tiring road trip, imagine, from the Ranger Station up to Ortigas if how many hours were the difference was.   Even it was really tiring, the whole adventure was perfect and everyone really enjoyed it.  I met a lot of new friends while on the trail, so I will not close my door in the world of Mountaineering and Solo-Backpacking.

Mt. Cristobal | The Devil's Mountain

Mt. Cristobal
It's almost a month ago, when someone added me to a Mountaineering group called "Sabit-Sabit Mountaineers" on facebook.  At first, I was hesitant to join this group, of course, I am a Filipina and I need to take care on that image - arte mode lang

After confirming that group, Reyna invited me to the event "WADAPAK sa Mt. Cristobal," since my planner has a vacant space for January 12-13, 2013 and I want an extra amazing experience, I joined them.  According to my research, Mt. Cristobal has hundred stories about ghosts, spirits, mumubells, multo and that's the reason why it's called the Devil's Mountain.  The Devil's Mountain is just beside the Holy Mountain, Mt. Banahaw, which is also situated in the Province of Quezon.  A lot of mountaineers and locals said that the main reason about those creepy stories, because all the negative energy from the holy mountain transferred to the devil's mountain, I don't know if Albert Einstein can explain this occurrence according to science.

Lola Helen Panciteria

Here's my detailed preparation for January 12, 2013 - 2:45AM - my BlackBerry rung, so that means I need to wake up, stand up and prepare myself for a huge physical activity for that day.  So, same routine: I prepared hot coffee and bread for breakfast; double checked my backpack; prepared my trekking attire; took a bath and personal hygiene; wore my attire; fixed my long, shiny, curly hair; applied face powder in front of the electric fan; opened my facebook to get updates about our trip and the weather.  Since everything was okay, NO TYPHOON SIGNAL - NO CANCELLATION OF CLASSES ooopps sorry, I mean, NO CANCELLATION OF THE ACTIVITY.  4:30AM - packing up time, but when I opened the door, I felt 5 droplets of rain, so it will not be a good trip for us, I think.

5:35AM - there was this guy; he's Short, Dark and Never Mind descended from Toyota Hi-Ace.  He's wearing TNF -trekking shoes, black leggings with blue printed boxer short; black shirt and a neon green TNF Electron Backpack.  He was holding 2 paper bags, and a bottle of red wine in the bag's side pocket - it was him.

From St. Francis, we walked few meters crossing EDSA-MegaMall foot bridge. Rode in an ordinary bus, going to McDonalds beside Jam Liner Bus Terminal - Taft.  We arrived late, all the participants were there and having their breakfast.  Of course, since it was my first time to see some of those pipz, I introduced myself as: " Hi! I am Dharzie, 24, Philippines " No! I am just kidding.

Mt. Cristobal Trail
After introducing ourselves, time to take my breakfast, I ordered burger and soda plus 1pc. chicken with rice - for take out, that's for my lunch. Total Attendance: 9 Sabiteers; 1 female - original, 1 female - fake and 7 gentlemen.

Next, rode in a bus bound for Jolibee Sam Pablo. Our backpacks were put in the compartment. Wait! while on the road, the scene wasn't good, heavy rains were there, there were a certain parts of Laguna with zero visibility on the road.  It's not a good vibes, but still I was hoping that in the jump-off, the weather will be fine.  Bus departure was 6:49AM and 8:30AM arrival in Jollibee - San Pablo, with 127 pesos bus fare.

Upon arrival we (with John) went to 7-11 convenience store nearby and bought bottled water.  There were a lot of mountaineers that time in Jollibee from a different group and company.  They were fixing  their things inside the backpacks.  9:00AM - left Jollibee going to the jump off.

We alighted the jeep at the jump off called the "Basurahan," the weather wasn't really good.  After few minutes, the heavy rain just fell into my long, curly hair and it's getting harder and harder, so we wore our raining gears.  At 9:55AM we ascended the wet and muddy trail guided by Mang Lito.  Just to give you a heads up, Mang Lito ascended Mt. Cristobal more than my age, so basically he really knew the right path to take and we simply followed him.

Trail Mt. Cristobal
This time, the trail is composed of wet and muddy terrain, so I can say "slipery when wet"  with some flowering plants (like gumamela) on the side, banana stalks, grass and some unfamiliar shrubs.  I also noticed the insects flying around my eyes and 5 mosquitoes - best in counting.  Some parts have sayote and gabi  plantation.  Before taking our lunch, we encountered the assault which I've used my hands to hold on the roots just to reach our goal - the Peak.

12:14NN - we took our lunch, while eating, cameras were rolling to get some stolen photos while our mouth were wide and open. 12:41PM we started ascent, and everyone were energetic and energized.

Mt. Cristobal trail
It was still raining and the wind breeze was really cold, the trail was still wet and muddy, and was getting harder and harder.  There were parts of the trail which we climbed creepingly the 90 degrees steep trail, good thing that the roots were there and helped us.  As the time goes by, before reaching the Jones Peak,  it was a long-slippery trail, and this time, no roots to depend to, just the cogon-like plant, so what I did?? I managed my pacing, my weight, and my beauty.  That part is the most challenging and the hardest trail I've ever been.

4:50PM we finally reached our goal - the Jones Peak of Mt. Cristobal.  The fog was really thick and I can't see the towns nearby.  The wind was strong and was really cold, thus I wore my poncho.

We waited for the last three, Sir Frank, Joanne and Marlon, then rest galore on the peak.  After few minutes, when everyone gained their energy, we started walking to the Saddle Camp.  The way going to the camp is another challenge, since I stands 5 feet 7 inches, and measures 36"23"36," I was getting a hard time walking with my knees bending, my body was leaning forward, because the cogon-like plants are taller than me, so we were just passing under the plant sharp-leaves (just think of a rat crawling under the tall grass) that's the reason why Sir Frank's bag rain cover and my poncho were cut.

Saddle Camp
The Saddle Camp was already filled with campers from the other teams. We were planning to camp at the Crater, it's few minutes from the Saddle Camp.  But, since there was a small available space in lower part of the camp, we decided to stay there.  The weather was still not good, it was still raining while everyone was settling the tents.  There were six tents occupying that small area, and the bad thing, the ground was uneven, so every time that we sit or lay down on the tent's ground sheet, we were sliding.

Chef Gen cooked our food for dinner while I was inside the tent having a cup of coffee to lessen the coldness that we felt.  Take note, we were 6 sharing that cup of coffee sponsored by Allan.  We have plain rice, and fried canned goods, now, define lazy?

After that sumptuous dinner by Chef Gen, it's time to warm ourselves.  We have 1 liter Brandy by Allan and 1 bottle of red wine by Gen.  That night was full of stories, a lot of stories, and full of stories so what is short stories?  Anyways, we talked about everything, from human anatomy, relationship and the lives of other people.

I think it was 11:30PM when I cleaned up the mess inside my tent - the tent of sin, to take a rest.  I was not alone that night, so I am secured about anything that might happen according to ghost stories.  Sorry guys, I can't elaborate more on what happened while sleeping, it's private. Oops wait! as usual, while sleeping, we were sliding downward because the ground was uneven.

Mt. Cristobal Saddle Camp
" Gising na! gising na! Alas sa-is na! " that's what I've heard from the other campers, which are just few steps from us.  I know that it was unintentional, but still it was bad, because there are other people who were still sleeping, right?  Unfortunately, I awoke and I can't sleep anymore.  I saw the sun shine penetrated on my tent's fly-sheet, so I went out and do my morning routine - follow me: stand up and inhale, exhale, that simple!  While others were still sleeping.

6:55AM, Chef Gen started cooking our breakfast, we were watching him and while drinking a cup of coffee.  So, same thing, horror story telling - Part 2.  For our breakfast: plain rice and fried canned goods, so again: define lazy?

7:18AM, we had our breakfast, while talking about other people's lives.  Of course, we were thinking about the other group.  9:15AM broke the camp.  As expected, everything are wet. Right after folding our stuff, time for photo shoot on the Saddle Camp.

The 9 Participants

9:55AM, the weather was fine, we descended the Saddle Camp following the trail to the Crater.  So the trail is still the same, mossy and wet, but the good thing here, the trail don't have the slippery mud, so it was really easy and 10:04AM we final reached the carter.  The Crater is actually a typical swamp area with water and grasses on the side.

 Mt. Cristobal 2020
at the Crater

At 10:14AM we left the crater and we just followed our guide.  The trail was really simple, no sticky mud, but it has some part where I bended my body due to some trees fell into the ground.  We reached the Montelibano House at 12:19PM, so there, I was able to clean myself, rest for few minutes and took some photos.  In that area, you can actually see the gorgeous Mt. Banahaw known as the Holy Mountain

We left the house at 12:28PM, and walked few kilometers on the cemented road going to Brgy. Kinabuhayan.  Along the way, you can see the beautiful mountain formation of Mt. Cristobal and Mt. Banahaw.  The wind was cold, the clouds were playing with the sun shine at the peak of the two gorgeous mountains.

Since, we had an agreement with the driver that he'll be the one to cook our lunch, so everything was okay. 1:28PM we took our lunch in the cottage beside the house of the driver.  For  our lunch: plain rice, ginatang native chicken served with soda.  Our stomach were full, so time to rest for 10 minutes then proceeded to the Mt. Banahaw Cave entrance - I don't know if it's the real name.

Kinabuhayan Quezon

Holy River Mt. Banahaw

2:08PM we've reached the Religious Zone of Mt. Banahaw river.  There were people who were getting water in that area.  As you can notice, their is  a mark on the stone, which I don't know what it symbolizes, but for the pilgrims, it's holy.  The river is covered with large boulders which serves as the bridge, that connects the two sides of the river. The boulders are covered with slippery moss which is dangerous to anyone who don't have experience in river crossing.

Holy Water Falls
Our plan was to visit the Holy Falls in that river but I tried to explore the river, the falls wasn't there.  According to our research, the way going to the falls has a different route, and we need to take the road instead of following the river.  When I heard that, my tears just fell on the ground, I tried to explore the river for more than 30 minutes, and he'll say, it's a different path??  Sorry I was just so dramatic!

I just want to thank the owner of the store in the entrance, beside the church, she was so kind and she let me change my outfit.  She opened her door to a beautiful stranger like me.  4:37PM we left the holy river and we walked few meters going back to the driver's house.  We took our few minutes break time in his store, drinking soda and eating the bread - as in plain bread.  5PM we left his store and we get on his jeep and he drove us going to Dolores, Quezon.  By 5:37PM we reached Dolores, Quezon and there we waited for 30 minutes for a bus bound to Manila.

We took a bus bound to Cubao, but since I'll be going to descend in Ortigas Ilalim, and it's not their route, so I decided to descend in Mega Mall.  Together with Gen, we took a taxi . . . . . and their  . . .

Mt. Cristobal is really good, I can suggest this mountain to all the mountaineers around the globe.  There were stories about something creepy there, but, it's up to you, you need to get a proof, you need to experience the nature.  But, again don't forget " love the earth, love the nature "

Mt. Banahaw | A Tree Planting Event

Mt. Banahaw
I’ve been to different outreach programs; I even organized some of them before. I already attended some forums and seminars about environmental hazards. But, this is my first time joining a Tree Planting Event in a mountain and it's Mt. Banahaw, the Holy Mountain. Organized by Jeff and Sadeck; participated by some mountaineers, outdoor enthusiasts and travellers. This event focused on planting more trees for the next generations and to prevent soil erosion resulting to flooding in the metro.

Nowadays, flooding and soil erosion is one of the huge problems in mountainous part of the country as it destroys livelihood, assets and even life. Actually just today, August 18, 2013, we encountered habagat and typhoon Maring, so all of us were affected! And according to DENR, the numbers of forest areas in the country lessen because of illegal activities. So we decided to have a “Tree Planting Event” at the holy mountain – Mt. Banahaw.

We chartered a jeep from Taft going to Brgy. Kinabuhayan (jump off of Mt. Cristobal) in Quezon. We met at McDo along LRT 1 Taft Station at 12 midnight. I recognized some participants and first time to see some new faces. The weather wasn’t that good because of the easterlies and the low pressure area in northern part of Luzon, so we all thought that everything will flow according to plans, but read our story below to find out what we encountered.

Mt. Banahaw
The weather was fine when we’re on our way to Quezon. We had several breaks in some 7-11 store along the way, but we had our final break at San Pablo, Laguna where we took our early breakfast at Friendly Mami along Maharlika Highway. Everyone of us was excitedly waited for our guide Kuya Lito near the basketball court. We grabbed that time to prepare for our today’s journey. Some bought coffee in nearby vendo machine while Saddeck chose preparing a 3n1 coffee mix. It was his first time using his stove and when he couldn’t make a flame, sir (I forgot his name) helped him. Next time, he needs to make sure that he reads the instructions. “Basa-basa din pag may time”

Tree Planting Event
When Kuya Lito and his son arrived, we read the rules and regulations issued by the DENR and WE PRAYED! After that, we proceeded to DENR at around 4:45AM and picked the seedlings that we’ll be going to plant at the holy mountain.

Real smile while holding the seedlings! Everyone got excited holding the seedlings of Nara tree; some picked the larger ones, but mostly selected the smaller sizes but older enough to survive their new environment. We stayed at DENR area for few minutes, and then started ascending!

Mt. Banahaw
We started planning our trees at 6:30AM. There were 20 participants in our group plus our guide, Kuya Lito and his son, so we’re 22 in total. We brought and planted 22 seedlings for the next generation. We are hoping that the 22 newly planted trees will survive in all factors in their new ecological unit.

mt. banahaw trail
Since Mt. Banahaw is still not open to the public; I easily recognized the beautiful flora and fauna in every corner of this holy mountain. The photo above is a proof of its richness; this gorgeous orange forest ornament wrapped by a pure white fog.

The video above is my 360 degrees shot at Kapatagan taken at around 8:30AM. As what you can see, the fog was really thick that made us chill because of the cold wind blowing our skin. Based on what you heard, the wind was strongly blowing the trees in the area.

Mt. Banahaw
We reached the summit at around 10:58AM, NO CLEARING, just a thick fog and a cold strong wind welcomed us. Instead of feeling frustrated at that moment, we enjoyed it! because we were able to reach that level and we’re all okay. After waiting the last group, we had a short break, and then prepared our lunch. Lunch break served as our social part – as in umaapaw nang pagkain, KANIN NGA LANG, tapos daliri nalang ulam! To all the pipz who shared their foods, thanks a lot! Special thanks to Cheng, because she brought and shared us her unique and the only ADOBONG ASIN, garnished with pork and oil. Sa alat ba naman, naging main ingredient ang asin ng hindi inaasahan!

After lunch, we thought the weather will change but it didn’t happen, but that’s okay! 12:30PM, we left the summit and we started descending the mountain. The rain drops were falling, then after few minutes, the drops transformed into strong rain showers. The wet trail transformed into a muddy one and the water was flowing along the trail while we’re descending in a hurry. The water was cold; the wind was colder, so the feeling wasn’t that good! But those factors didn’t stop us enjoying Mt. Banahaw.

Mt. Banahaw 2020
We reached Kapatagan at around 1:30PM at we waited there until we’re completed. The weather was still the same, but we were not hearing the rain drops or the winds hissing sound anymore because it was changed into hilarity and happiness. Because the trail was slippery because of the rain, instead of being upset, we made that time to know more about ourselves. We also counted if how many times fell on the ground and how many times we stood up and proceeded – that’s applicable to our life, isn’t it?

Hiking Mt. Banahaw
I was taking photos of the grass but I accidentally included the faces of these people and with the fog as the white background. This time, good thing that the rain stopped, so we waited the rest by talking anything that came to our mind.

When we’re complete, we continued descending. We thought that everything will be fine, because it’s just two hours trek going to the jump off at Brgy. Kinabuhayan, but we encountered another challenge that hindered our speed. We were walking on the trail that serves as the trail of the horses that transports veggies for their livelihood, so the soil was eroded and the mud was really thick. So, that remaining time was spent in balancing, bending our knees and holding to the grass and trees for our brake. I think the mud didn’t hinder us in terms of speed, I think it helped us a lot! We almost run because the gravity was pulling us down.

DENR Mt. Banahaw
We finally made it! We reached DENR at around 3:49PM. Then, we proceeded to the “holy river of Banahaw,” took a rest, cleaned ourselves and our dirty stuff while waiting for the rest. Some people were fetching water from the river, because according to the believers, the water on the river is miraculous as it can cure any diseases.

It will be my second time visiting this river, the first time was during our climb in Mount Cristobal, where some called it the “Devils Mountain” Just to give you an idea, at the river near the entrance (probably the beginning of the river) the Religious Zone can be found where a foot mark on the rock can be found. The believers said that the foot mark there is from Jesus Christ. I don’t want to comment on that belief, but all I can say is: if you are Christian, you need to believe in the Bible; you need to live based on the Bible and not just for some belief created by humans. FAITH TO OUR GOD is the ONLY WAY FOR A MIRACULOUS LIFE.

The rain drops were falling on the ground, so after cleaning and taking a break at the nearby store, we proceeded to our service and left Brgy. Kinabuhayan. Majority of the group were sleeping, I know that because I was staring to them the whole time. The rain and the wind got stronger and stronger; so instead of listening to that noise, I turned on my iPod and listened to the songs of Beyonce, Mariah Carrey, Rihanna and Shakira to relieve the stress I felt because of the storm. We took our dinner in Bulalo restaurant along the high way of Laguna. We stayed there for less than an hour and then proceeded to our destination. We were on the way, when we encountered a storm, please play the video below:

The wind and rain hitting the windshield was really strong! The other participants woke up because of what’s happening outside. The other cars opened their hazard lights because it was almost in zero visibility to prevent accident. We were in that situation for almost two hours, so kudos to our driver! We finally reached Taft, so we thought everything is fine now, but the water in the terminal  was in kneed high level, so that’s another problem. I was thinking of the situation in my area in Cainta, Rizal; because our subdivision is a flood prone area.

Different plans came into my mind because I was considering everything. Finally, we (with a new found friend) proceeded to MRT Station, took a ride going to Ortigas station while our bags and other stuff were wet. The passengers in the train were all neat and we didn’t care about it! When we get off at Ortigas Station, we saw high water level along EDSA. Walked going to Robinsons Galleria, took a ride in the bus (good thing that we were the first ones entered the bus so we were able to get a seat.) I was the first one get off the bus, so I said Good Bye to my new found friend! I walked, took a short jeepney ride, but when I was at the tricycle terminal, the drivers couldn’t make to our street because we’ll be going to pass along the street filled with flood and the water can reach the trike’s motor and might stop. Another tricycle arrived at the terminal and his trike is higher compared to the others, so he said YES. Another passenger entered the trike and he’s soooo cute! I was in left part holding my huge backpack placed on the trike’s floor and he was on my right. He’s shoulder touches my shoulder; he was embracing his small backpack. When we’re along the street with deeper flood, he said: “uy, yung bag mo baka mabasa” so I grabbed my bag and put on my lap, he was so kind and his voice is still in my mind until right now! I am so KILIG!! And I finally reached my apartment securely. Thanks for reading our story see you next time!
